Wilson's Bird of Paradise

The Wilson's bird-of-paradise is a species of passerine bird of the Paradisaeidae family. An Indonesian endemic, the Wilson's bird-of-paradise is distributed to the hill and lowland rainforests of Waigeo and Batanta Islands off West Papua. This image was taken on Batanta. Not a particularly good quality image but the conditions were limiting. A 5am start and 1/2 hr boat ride took me to Batanta from Birie. A wade through magrove and then 20 minute hike through jungle followed by 20 min climb through jungle took us to a rudimentary hide. The male, if you are lucky, comes down in the early morning to clear up his nesting site for the female. Obstructions and low light meant the photo opportunities were limited but I include this image for the record.
Taken in September 2014.
